Director of Europol, Rob Wainright, right, looks on as Pope Francis enters the room

Rob Wainwright is the Director of Europol. On day one of the 'Combating Human Trafficking' conference, when the group of delegates gathered for dinner, he provided the evening address sharing his 15 years of experience tackling human trafficking.

"[Human trafficking] is more than just counting numbers of criminals and size of illicit profits. This is a trade in human misery. Victims are enslaved for long periods and even if rescued, suffer a lifetime of physical and psychological consequences. So combating it is about the fundamental issue of what values we wish to project in any well-respecting society, recognising human trafficking, therefore, for what it actually is – 'a crime against humanity' - as Pope Francis has said."
