Jihadism: Plague of the MENA region in the 21st Century?

Today's Middle East Analysis departs from its usual close examination of the key events playing out in the region and looks at Jihad - in particular the alarming rise of Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, in Syria and Iraq.

A number of countries in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region are undeniably at war. Over the summer months ISIS has dominated the headlines with its gruesome videos, aggressive propaganda and social media savvy. Global fear of the well-organised, 15,000-strong al-Qaeda off-shoot is palpable.

Is there a continuing humanitarian crisis in Syria? Instability and blood-letting in Libya? Are Lebanon and Jordan on the brink? What of the power vacuums in states awaiting leadership elections? These critical situations in the region are being pushed to the back-burner as far as our media outlets are concerned.

Today's podcast seeks to answer these questions:

  • What is ISIS?
  • How is it funded?
  • What are its tactics?
  • What is its impact on the region and the wider world?

Our Middle East North Africa consultant, international lawyer Dr Harry Hagopian gives his views and looks at the presence of radicalised young Britons on the battlefields of MENA. He also looks at the roles given to disaffected European women who have left their countries to fight for ISIS.

It would be tricky, if not impossible, to take an in-depth historical look at Jihad and its roots. This podcast looks primarily at ISIS and how it is impacting on the MENA region.
