Banned during Communism, thriving now: The Catholic Church in Belarus

19/12/2014 10:29 am

Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz of Minsk and Mahilyow, Belarus

One of the joys of having a radio studio on the ground floor here at the Bishops' Conference is that it gives us the opportunity to interview visitors from all corners of the globe.

A little over a month ago, we welcomed Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz of Minsk-Mohilev, Belarus, to talk about his work in the Eastern European country and how the Catholic Church is thriving under his stewardship.

But the Church wasn't always able to grow and prosper at the heart of the community. In Communist times it was banned - the Archbishop himself was expelled from teacher training college because it was discovered he was a believer. Repression of the Catholic Church in Belarus continued until the late 1980s.

Archbishop Tadeusz has been a Bishop for 25 years. He was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Minsk before being transferring to Moscow where, in 1999, he was installed as Metropolitan and Archbishop of the newly-formed Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Russia's capital city.

In 2007, he was translated back to Minsk after the death of Cardinal Kazimierz Świąte.

2015 promises to be a very productive year in the life of the Church in Belarus. Archbishop Tadeusz, at the request of President Alexander Lukashenko, is responsible for the creation of a new university in the capital Minsk - a project endorsed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

In addition, a Catholic kindergarten and social centre for children with disabilities is currently under construction and will be the first of its kind in Belarus.

The Archbishop is passionate and pro-active about his ministry as you'll hear in today's Catholic News podcast.
