Pope Benedict arrives in Cologne

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has arrived in Cologne. He was greeted at the airport by the German Chancellor Gerard Schroeder and President Horst Koehler and thousands of cheering young catholics who had gathered to welcome him.

The Pope waved to the crowd as he made his way down the red carpet.

Pope Benedict is due to sail along the Rhine to meet WYD groups at Rheinwiesen wharf and then he will travel back to Cologne via the river to visit Cologne Cathedral this afternoon.

He will drive through the city in the Popemobile on Sunday before the closing mass.
