People in Prayer

Here are a series of prayers you can pray with us on 23 February keeping in mind, particularly, the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.

A Prayer for World Peace (1978)

Lord, we pray for the power to be gentle; the strength to be forgiving; the patience to be understanding; and the endurance to accept the consequences of holding to what we believe to be right.

May we put our trust in the power of good to overcome evil and the power of love to overcome hatred.

We pray for the vision to see and the faith to believe in a world emancipated from violence, a new world where fear shall no longer lead men to commit injustice, nor selfishness make them bring suffering to others.

Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy to the task of making peace, praying always for the inspiration and the power to fulfil the destiny for which we and all men were created.

A prayer for Solidarity with South Sudan

Father of Love and Mercy,
You created our people from every clan,
tribe and nationality.
It is your will that all our people
should live in harmony, peace and unity,
because we are all brothers and sisters.
We ask forgiveness for the times
we failed to live together in peace.
Heal our offenses and help us
to reconcile with one another.
Grant to our leaders your divine wisdom
and help us to promote respect, justice
and true reconciliation,
so that the people of South Sudan
may live in unity and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Instruments of your peace

God of Peace, St. Francis prayed, "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace."
And so do we. Make us instruments of your peace.
Allow instruments of peace to rise up in South Sudan and in the Democratic Republic of Congo
And flourish all over your world: instruments of peace who offer stability, safety, and justice that bring joy and hope; that foster hearts of reconciliation, mercy, and love.

God of Justice,
The prophet Jeremiah likened your saving justice to towering mountains.
And so do we. May your justice tower over the people of South Sudan and of the Democratic Republic of Congo:
Upholding the righteous,
Protecting the widow and orphan,
Staying the hand that seeks violence,
Reconciling brother with brother,
Sister with sister, your children with each other.

God of Plenty,
Your Son showed us how in faith, prayer and generosity,
Your bounty could be multiplied and so will we.
Bless South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo with a bountiful harvest;
Let this conflict not dry its fields or close its markets
Or still its people's desire to share what they have.

Banish famine from their land and turn the hearts of all to those who hunger
That we may all share what you have blessed us with;
That their baskets may be filled,
That their cups may overflow,
That their children may flourish.

Our Father of Peace

Jesus, who passed through this world sowing the true Peace, taught his disciples a prayer as simple as deep. Today we dare to paraphrase it saying together:

My Father, our Father,
Father of all.
Hallowed be your peace.
Help us to make present your kingdom of justice so that we have peace.
A peace not only heavenly, also earthly, here and now.
Give us today and each day our share of peace so that we share it with those who do not have enough.
Teach us to forgive and to reconcile ourselves, with others and with you.
Do not let us fall under the temptation of violence.
And deliver us from hatred.

God of Life

God of Life,

We join with the ecumenical leaders of South Sudan and the Republic Democratic of Congo in their call for peace.

We pray that in South Sudan and in the Republic Democratic of Congo would be countries where justice, liberty and prosperity for all shall truly reign.

We pray that they would become countries where people will live long and children will not die young and senselessly.

We pray that the lessons from history will be learned, that issues would be resolved quickly and so avoiding the suffering of many.

We pray for healing of division, for hunger to be filled and for hope to flourish in South Sudan and the Republic Democratic of Congo.

Pray that peace agreements will be implemented and a lasting ceasefire will be reached in every region by all factions involved.

Pray for the millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes.

Pray for those who have lost loved ones in the fighting and attacks.

Pray that food and essential items will be put in place for communities, especially those in hardest to reach areas.

Pray for the Council of Churches and all the churches, and the courageous work they are doing to spread powerful messages of peace.

Pray for the millions of people currently in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

Pray that the international community will provide the immediate assistance and longer-term support needed by the people of South Sudan.

Pray that an arms embargo becomes effective and promoted by the international community

Pray that human life and dignity prevails over multinationals' interests.

Pax Christi, the Church's international Catholic movement for peace, supports communities in their peacemaking efforts and shines a light on the things that deny peace and fuel conflict: the global arms trade, the manufacture of fear and mistrust, the scapegoating of the ‘other’.
CAFOD, the Church's agency for overseas aid and development has a program in South Sudan.
CAFOD also works in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
