On Sunday 18 September, the bishops of England and Wales invite every parish to celebrate Home Mission Sunday. It's the day in the Church's calendar when the Catholic community prays for, celebrates and supports the work of evangelisation in our two countries.
In choosing this year’s theme two priorities are proposed for prayer and reflection. Inspired by our 2015 National Catholic Evangelisation Conference, the first priority is to 'Proclaim'. As a fruit of prayer we'd like every Catholic, every family and every parish to take a new step to share their faith more joyfully and confidently, and so build missionary parishes.
Our second priority, as the Year of the Mercy draws to an end, is to encourage everyone to share the joy of love - that Catholic individuals, engaged and married couples, as well as families, will consider afresh how they can witness to “the joy of love” to others.
We've got some resources you can download to help you celebrate Home Mission Sunday:
Please kindly assist us by promoting Home Mission Sunday and the second collection in your parish newsletter, on your parish website and as a notice at the end of Sunday Mass. You may find the following draft paragraph useful; it can be adapted for use the weekend before (11 September), and on the weekend of the celebration (18 September). The money raised makes possible the bishops’ work of evangelisation nationally.
Home Mission Sunday, 18 September 2016
Theme: Proclaim the Joy of Love
Home Mission Sunday is celebrated today and is themed: "Proclaim the Joy of Love". On this day we are encouraged to pray for the work of evangelisation in England and Wales, remembering in our prayers especially those whom we know are distant from the life of faith. Please support the second collection which funds the bishops’ national work of evangelisation. The collection also ensures that the Catholic Faith Centre is resourced to respond to those who have questions about the Catholic Faith.
It is possible to donate online at: catholicnews.org.uk/donate-hms.
Commemorative prayer cards are available to take away.
Please support the work of Home Mission through your prayers and generosity. For more information see: catholicnews.org.uk/hms16. God bless you and thank you.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Research suggests that the majority of baptised Catholics rarely have contact with their local parish. Furthermore, that the number of people who identify themselves as having 'no religion' is on the rise. Please help us, through your prayers and the taking of a second collection on Sunday 18 September, to develop new resources and strategies to reach out to people with the message of God’s unconditional love and mercy. The funds raised support the work of the Bishops’ Department for Evangelisation and Catechesis.
