Heythrop college will be holding a colloquium on healthcare systems and reform, with Dr Gerald A. Arbuckle SM and Dr Desmond Ryan, on Saturday 17 November 2012 from 9.30 am until 5.00 pm.
Healthcare systems are reinventing themselves to meet rising costs, and to respond to the needs of increasingly well-informed, demanding populations. Driven by political and economic concerns, the culture of reform in the West is predominantly secular, technical and consumerist. And yet the ‘founding narratives’ of Western healthcare systems were religious, ethical and charitable. Over much of the world, it is to their faith that people look to find meaning in suffering, sickness and death. Can there be a place for humane values in the next generation of healthcare systems?
