Holistic Support for Victims of Trafficking

The Catholic Church plays a vital role in supporting the victims of trafficking. In many cases, victims have suffered psychological damage from their traumatic experiences. This can lead to a variety of difficulties including substance abuse and eating disorders. There are also more immediate needs that have to be met like finding safe accommodation and facilitating immediate medical assistance. Sr Imelda Poole from the Loreto Sisters, Albania, has first-hand experience working with victims. In her presentation, she looks at the pastoral care side of the recovery process with the aim of empowering victims and helping them to re-build trust. Some of the topics covered in the presentation:

  • Accommodation and reintegration planning
  • Reconciliation with family if possible
  • Evaluation and psycho-social counselling
  • Legal assistance
  • Assistance to register and attend school
  • Facilitating professional training
